The military men and women who serve this great country face pressures and challenges most of us will never know. They face it with undying courage and singleness of purpose. This courage and purpose keeps America a shining city to all the world, and keeps Her a beacon for the most precious dream of all. The dream that we believe is endowed to us by our Creator. The dream to be… Free.

Our young soldiers answer the call to protect our land and befriend our flag from all walks of life, and from all corners of America. But no matter what color, class or crossroad they come from, our young soldiers prepare side by side as a team and side by side to win. They learn very early on that their survival largely depends on how well they can be trusted and how well they have each other's back.

The deployment goodbye can be absolutely gut wrenching. The uncertainty of war, the magnitude of the mission, the length of the deployment and the separation from loved ones all press heavy on the hearts and minds of those involved. The long embrace suggests it could be the last time they see each other. But that long goodbye is also filled with the hope that, if all goes well, this will be the last time such a mission will ever be needed again.

When soldiers and airmen are deployed, there are some common reactions among loved ones. For some there is much reflection. For some there is fervent prayer. For some anxiety. And for others, there is deep pride. In classrooms throughout the country, children place their hands over their heart to recite the pledge of allegiance, but none do it as reverently as the children of deployed military soldiers and airmen.

When a loved one departs to fight in war, family members cling to news, any news, about the war's development. And yet they know, no matter what the news, their lives must go on. So they continue with everyday errands as much as possible. They focus on the duties of raising children, keeping a home, and staying healthy, upbeat and optimistic. And most certainly… they pray.

As war approaches, the nation as a whole bristles with pride and patriotism. Meanwhile, the military silently prepares for battle. They work overtime to get ready, preparing to defend our ideals, our faith, our land, our dreams. And as the soldiers and airmen work overtime to get ready, their families make sacrifices, too.

After all is said and done, there are times when the battle must be fought. Soldiers of all levels of experience feel the anxiety, but their training has been sound, their mission is clear and their fellow troops are trusted. It has been said that courage is not the absence of fear but the facing of it. American soldiers always face their duty with courage. And they always face it united as one.

In so many ways, War is a job. A dangerous job, a hellish job, but a job that has teamwork, duties and responsibilities as any job. But in War, soldiers constantly carry the pressing weight of survival. They experience tragedies and atrocities that are unimaginable. Yet, in the end it is a job that that must be done. The job to liberate Good and defeat Evil.

In battle, it seems inevitable that soldiers must die. Their Homecoming is not how they intended it to be, but every single one of them comes home a Hero. Sometimes the numbers of Fallen Heroes are so numerous; it's hard to keep in mind how special each soldier was. But to family and friends, the special qualities of the Fallen Hero will always be remembered.

The tour of duty has finally ended, the war is finally over. It is time for the soldier to come home to the loving embrace of a nation, the loving embrace of a family. We celebrate with banners and presents, sweaty palms and tears, laughs and hugs, pictures and reunions--all proudly hailing a returning hero.
